City of Ghent - Ghent, sparkling city of culture

It is certainly no coincidence that Ghent, the capital of East-Flanders, was named a number of outstanding names: historic heart of Flanders, a city of all times, one of the most beautiful historic towns of Europe. Ghent makes up the triangle of the Flemish cities of Art with Bruges and Antwerp. The town was founded at the intersection of the Lys and the Scheldt and can boast some famous descendants such as Emperor Charles V, Maurice Maeterlinck, Victor Horta, …

Ghent combines an impressive past with a vivid present. From St. Michael’s bridge you have a splendid view on the Ghent skyline with its three towers: St. Nicolas’ church, the Belfry with its bell tower and St. Bavo’s Cathedral with the world famous painting "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan and Hubert van Eyck. The best way to get to know the city’s typical characteristics is on foot. The Municipal Museum for Contemporary Art (S.M.A.K.) as well as the Museum of Fine Arts are also worth visiting.
